Exotic Animal Series - Protecting Your Small but Mighty Companions: A Guide to Rabbit and Ferret Vaccinations
At Orange Grove Animal Hospital, we know that pets come in all shapes and sizes. While dogs and cats are the usual suspects for annual shots, our smaller friends—like rabbits and ferrets—require specialized preventative care to stay healthy and happy.
If you’re a proud parent of a "pocket pet," here is what you need to know about the essential vaccines we recommend.
Rabbits: The Threat of RHDV2
One of the most critical vaccines we provide is for Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus Type 2 (RHDV2). Many owners remember the 2020 outbreak here in Arizona, which saw a massive surge in cases and a rush for vaccinations.
Why is it so dangerous? RHDV2 is a highly stable virus, meaning it can survive for a long time in the environment. It is often deadly and can be introduced to your home in unexpected ways:
On your clothing or shoes after walking outdoors.
Contaminated hay or greens where wild rabbits may have been.
Interaction with wild rabbit populations, where the disease remains prevalent.
The Vaccination Schedule: We can begin vaccinating bunnies once they reach 7 weeks of age. The process involves:
An initial vaccination.
A booster shot three weeks later.
Annual boosters thereafter to maintain immunity.
Ferrets: Distemper and Rabies
Ferrets are playful, curious creatures, but they are incredibly susceptible to certain viruses that can turn fatal very quickly.
Ferret Distemper: The distemper virus has a high mortality rate in dogs and is even higher with ferrets. It typically begins with gastrointestinal issues but quickly progresses to the neurological system, leading to seizures. Because it is so aggressive, annual vaccination is the only reliable way to protect them.
Rabies: Even indoor ferrets should receive an annual rabies vaccine. It is a standard safety measure for their health and your family’s protection.
Schedule Your Annual Check-Up
The good news is that keeping your pets protected doesn't have to be a hassle. All of these vaccinations can be completed during your pet's regular annual exam. Prevention is always better (and more affordable) than treatment. Whether your companion hops, slinks, or oinks, we are here to ensure they have a long, healthy life by your side.
